Computing

We want children to be confident users of technology; to be creators of digital content and our broad curriculum, encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy.

Building knowledge in this subject will allow children to effectively demonstrate their learning through creative uses of technology. We aspire to create a knowledge-rich curriculum that is balanced, with the opportunity for children to apply their knowledge creatively, and which will help our children become digitally literate.

Computing in action

At St John’s and St Clement’s we offer children a wide curriculum based on multiple platforms and software and based on Rising Stars “Switched on Computing”. Lessons provide children with concrete, practical experiences as well as plenty of opportunities to use a variety of digital devices to develop their new skills.

Many of our units of study provide students with offline activities to engage students physically in computing and help them to cement their understanding of abstract computing concepts. Children are encouraged to work collaboratively and to share their successes as they build on their analytical, problem solving and creative thinking skills.

Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive activities with all pupils working on the same activities at the same time pupils are also offered opportunities to extent and enrich their learning along with differentiated resources to ensure that all students are challenged at an appropriate level. Lessons are structured so that concepts are developed in logical steps with particular attention given to fundamental concepts. This ensures that all children can master computing concepts before moving to the next stage on their learning journey.
