The Arts

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It is concerned with the way we respond to, understand, interpret and shape our world through our senses and emotions.  Taking part in art and design allows us to investigate what we see; to make visual responses; to interpret; to discriminate and reach decisions.  Art and design has its own language based upon the visual elements. At St John’s and St Clement’s we believe all children have the right to develop artistic awareness and acquire skills, knowledge and understanding to express individual ideas. We believe the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.  Through learning about the roles and functions of art, the children can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. We aim to increase pupils’ first-hand experiences of art, craft and design through school visits to art galleries and other enrichment activities.

At St John’s and St Clement’s we see the relationship with parents as very important in supporting their child’s learning. We endeavour to draw in the parental and wider community through school-based and collaborative events between schools via displays, exhibitions and workshops. We are committed to building meaningful relationships with local galleries and wherever possible, maximise opportunities to exhibit our work in professional gallery spaces.
Art plays an important part in a child’s early development. The Early Learning Goals encompass all areas of creative development.   Art and design is taught by a dedicated art teacher in key stage 1 and 2. A variety of teaching and learning styles are used in lessons. Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in art and design. We ensure that the act of investigating and making something includes exploring and developing ideas, and evaluating and developing work. Children also have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials and resources, including ICT.
