BBC Ten Pieces Project - Year 3

Year 3 have been taking part in a wonderful project called BBC Ten Pieces:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01vs08w.

The whole year group started the project with a visit to Brixton Ritzy cinema to watch the Ten Pieces film. They discussed their initial reactions to film (likes/dislikes/feelings etc….) and this was the start of much creativity.

3M have worked with composer Pete Letanka to create their own fanfares in groups using their voices and body percussion. They wrote a whole class poem which became a song, composed by the children. Finally, with Pete, the children composed their own class piece using Firebird motifs and rhythms and phrases created by the children.

3B and 3E worked in groups to create their own storymaps to go with "Firebird". They used these as a basis for some movement. They created their own moves inspired by the poem written by 3M. These were put together to create a dance piece. The children created feather designs in response to the Firebird music, poem and dance which were embroidered onto t-shirts to create costumes for the dancers.

Year 3 finally had the honour of performing their pieces to children from other schools at the prestigious Rambert Studio on the Southbank. Here is a short video of the dance:

We would like to thank Pete Letanka, Melisa Jo (Gabriel's Mum) and Margaret Omoniyi for giving up their time to ensure the success of this project.

Year 3 children are now in the process of recording their creative journey in an Art Log with a view to earning themselves a personal Art Award - Explore level.
